How to Replace Your Watch Battery

Start by laying the watch face-down on a gentle surface (such as a towel) that won't scratch the crystal. Check the back of the case for a tab OR depression at the cover's edge. Use something stiff and dull, like a butter knife or flathead screwdriver, to pull the rear cover off by gently wedging the object into the depression or against the tab, until the cover gives way. If the back of the watch doesn't have a tab or indentation that you can use to get access, you can use a vice to secure it while you place the tool at the seam where the case back and the watch body meet, and then tap it with a rubber mallet. Take care that your tools don't fly off and smash the cover or hurt you.

If the battery is in plain sight, check to see if it is secured in place by a bracket. If this is the case, use the screwdriver from your glasses repair kit to carefully loosen the bracket.

Turn the watch over and tap it gently so that the battery falls out. This is done after any other obstructions to its removal have been removed. To avoid potentially damaging the watch's delicate internals, it's best to let the battery slide out of the case rather than pry it out. When replacing the battery, take care not to lose any of the washers or gaskets, since they must be reinserted into the watch exactly as they were before the battery was removed.

A new battery must be installed in the watch in the same orientation as the old one. Replace the washers and the brackets, and then press them firmly into place. Align the back cover, making that the tab or recess is flush with the corresponding part of the case. To reattach the back cover, slide its edge into the casing in the opposite direction of the depression or tab, and then press down firmly all over its surface.

The process may appear simple at first glance, but there are various varieties of timepieces that require the expertise of a jeweler to service. Vacuum-sealed timepieces are often considered waterproof, however, opening the case will likely render it no longer watertight. High-end timepieces (some of which may not even need batteries) should never be serviced at home; instead, they should be taken to a jeweler.
